I’m a quarter of the way through my Diverse Authors Project year, so it seems like a good time for an update. With pretty charts!
NB: This is based on the authors’ own websites and Goodreads pages. Not everyone chooses to make their sexuality, gender identity, races, or nationalities a matter of public record, so I focused on the public identities that made me consider this person a “diverse author.” Racial identity in particular is complex and rarely posted on a website, so I stuck to “White” vs. “Of Color.”
So far, it strikes me that I’m missing two big continents! I would love to hear about YA or MG authors with African or South American roots. (Yes, I’ve already read Nnedi Okorafor.) I also couldn’t even make a Disabled chart because to the best of my knowledge, none of these authors are neuro-atypical or have a permanent disability. I’d love recommendations in that area, as well. (Yes, I’ve already read Lyn Miller-Lachman.)
