Cybils: The Good Neighbors, bk. 1, by Holly Black and Ted Naifeh

November 28th, 2008 · No Comments

The Good Neighbors coverRue’s mother has disappeared, her distraught father stands accused of murdering one of his students, and now Rue is seeing strange things. Her normal town is now full of demons, humanoid creatures made of twigs, and faeries.

I’ll give the next bit away, because it’s obvious early on: Rue’s mother is a faerie, and Rue is in the middle of a tug-of-war for her identity. Will she renounce her faerie side and go back to being a normal human teenager, or will throw in her lot with the faeries? What I won’t give away is the deal with her mother’s disappearance and her father’s student’s death. I thought I had both figured out, but I was quite wrong.

This is a wonderfully creepy book. Rue’s dilemma feels real — she wants her normal life back, yes, but she feels it slipping away anyway as her boyfriend and friends realize she’s changing and look at her differently. And the murder mystery’s resolution is satisfying, if not especially tied to Rue’s main plot.

The gloomy black-and-white art provides the perfect atmosphere for the story: an otherworldly and sinister sensuality, which underscores the unhealthy sexual relationships at the heart of both storylines. I loved this, and can’t wait for the next book!
