Cybils: Little Vampire, by Joann Sfar

Little Vampire cover

Oh, Little Vampire, you had me at, “Poop is always sure to please.” (Actually, you had me at the premise: as we’ve already established, I’m a huge sucker (ha! vampire puns!) for monsters who are a little scary but nice at heart.)

I loved everything about this book, from the cute-but-not-cutesy stories, to Little Vampire’s grouchy red floating dog Phantomato (because he’s the color of a tomato — are those words both similar enough in French that the pun is the same, or did it have to be adjusted, I wonder?), to the super-saturated Nightmare Before Christmas-esque art.

It’s probably Fantomato in French. I guess since one is a Greek borrowing and the other is Aztec, those two words tend to be similar in lots of languages.

Thanks, Denis! (Tomato is Aztec? Cool!)

Yeah – there are some nice lists of English words borrowed from New World languages at Mark Rosenfelder’s site and of course at Wikipedia.
