Cybils: North World, by Lars Brown

North World cover
Things that are awesome about North World:

  • The world-building: it takes place in modern-day Canada, except that oh, btw, there’s demons and talking bears, and heroes whose job it is to protect everyone from them.
  • The hilarious dialogue. (When Conrad, the everyguy hero, attacks a shlubby guy in his house for supposedly being a demon-summoner, he pounces on his bookshelf: “What’s all this? These are all sci-fi books.” Non-demon-summoner: “There’s nothing wrong with explorative genre fiction.”)
  • Conrad’s librarian/bookstore-owner ex, Emily.

Things that are less awesome about North World:

  • Conrad’s abrupt transformation from lone-wolf fighter dude to warm ‘n fuzzy family man.
  • The shoddy printing — I get ink all over my fingers every time I pick it up.

Things I’m still torn about:

  • The webcomic-esque art. Is it amateurish, or charming? At first I thought the former, but now that I’m looking at it again, it’s grown on me.

    Ooh, fun!

I really just stopped by to brag that I (a) updated my website layout and (b) actually caught up on my NaNoWriMo novel.

But now I’m intrigued by this book you describe. Hmmm…
