Cybils: The Apocalypstix, by Ray Fawkes and Cameron Stewart

Apocalypstix cover

Ok, people, true fact: I read four of these nominated buggers today. That’s the kind of volume we’re talking about here. I committed to reviewing everything I read, and I intend to keep up with that — mostly because it’s good for me, as a writer and as a person who remembers stuff better if she writes about it — but these are going to be short, yo. Um, after I stop rambling about how short they’re going to be.

Apocalypstix! It’s got “apocalypse” in the name, so it’s gotta be good! Basically this is Tank Girl meets Scott Westerfeld’s The Last Days, only with all the angst and intensity sucked out and replaced by hot-pink cotton candy. A trio of badass multicultural girl rockers are some of the few survivors of a nuclear apocalypse, to which they respond by gathering their instruments, some guns, and a big-ass bus, and starting an adventure-filled cross-country road trip of rock ‘n roll.

The apocalypse part doesn’t make any sense, but whatever — there’s so much grrrl power, giant ant…itude (heh), and large-fonted onomatopoeia (”SHKREE! WUMPP! KRA-KOOOOM!”) that you can’t possibly not have fun with this.
