Cybils: Benny and Penny in Just Pretend, by Geoffrey Haynes

November 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Benny and Penny cover
Cute little older mouse Benny wants to play pirate. His cute little younger mouse sister Penny wants to play with him. He doesn’t want to let her, because sisters are a pain. So he hides from her, until he decides playing by himself is boring, and besides, she’s braver than he is about scary, scary dragonflies.

Meh. It’s basically an easy reader, only the words are in speech bubbles rather than in lines outside the illustration — I’m not sure that the graphic novel format adds much. The art is cute, but generic in a “Little Golden Book” sort of way.

It might be that little kids would love it; I don’t have any or teach any, so I can’t be the judge of that. (Though I do remember being totally bored by Little Golden Books when I was the right age for them.) It certainly doesn’t have any of the sass that makes Magic Trixie and Babymouse fun for adults.
