Apologies, again, for being AWOL. I have a stack of reviews in the queue, and I’m going to try to bang them out quickly to catch up. Brevity is the name of the game, folks!

Kristin recommended this little book to me — and as she pointed out, it was a perfect choice for Banned Books Week. It’s so squicky that I’m sure it’s been banned somewhere.

The Willow family — parents and five kids — farm on some run-down land in middle-of-nowhere, Australia and earn extra cash by running a camp for people to park their RVs on vacation. There is nothing that is not deeply wrong with this family, and when young Oliver befriends a traveling artist, it all starts to unravel.

My favorite thing about this book is that there is not a single character who is not both sympathetic and disturbed. Almost every action is both understandable and horrifying. It exists in a state of perfect grey area. It’s beautifully written, but creepy as hell. The blurb comparing it to Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor was not wrong. If that’s your thing, you will love Sleeping Dogs.
