Via Stuff White People Like, more on the subject of “checking people out”:
‘Black Guy’ booth livens up Corvallis Saturday market
Sherry Littlefield of Corvallis said the booth was unnecessary. She and friend Ron Naasko said they have black friends, and would be voting for Barack Obama for president.
Also not to be missed:
“Two Wars”, an episode of This American Life: The TV Show, part of which features Haider Hamza, an Iraqi student in the US who spends his summer traveling around the country with a Lucy-from-Peanuts-style booth labeled “Talk to an Iraqi.” He sets up his booth in parks, malls, and yes, in front of libraries, and TAL films him talking to whoever wants to talk to him. You can buy the episode from iTunes, I think, or you can watch it here and here on YouTube (and then go give TAL some dollars).
Woman: [George Bush] would do anything to protect this country. I truly believe that.
HH: Don’t you think this is a bit selfish, to say, he’s going to do anything to protect this country, and you don’t care what happens anywhere else?
Woman: It’s extremely selfish, but I’d rather my home be protected than someone else’s home be protected.
HH: But how is your home going to be protected by having people in Iraq dying? How is that affecting your home?
Woman: True. That’s a good point. I don’t know.

good lord. When I saw your initial quotation there about “and we are voting for Barak Obama”, I assumed the link was going to be to the Onion.
Hey, you crazy farmer’s market-shopping liberals who live in non-diverse neighborhoods? GET OFF MY SIDE.

Hee. I think you just described *us*, though.
It’s conceivable that that line (which isn’t a quote) could have been said in a reasonable way, in context. But it’s still hilarious.

I don’t have a single friend who is black. And that has been true for a number of years. I don’t know why. Sometimes, I wonder if I have some sort of implicit racism.
