    Is the picture with the “Knowledge is Never Wasted” sign the library you worked on?

    Nope, that’s the library in the Cape Coast Castle. It’s run by a real librarian. My library is at the beginning of the photoset.

    Anything more to tell about the “not allowed to speak in public” rule for the chiefs and queen mothers?

    Hmm…not much, unfortunately. The closest analogy is that the linguists are basically speechwriters, except they give the speeches, too. Ghanaians really like long impressive speeches, so it’s the linguist’s job to make the chief or queen mother sound good. In smaller gatherings, like when I went to the chief’s house to be welcomed to the village, the linguist seems to do the ceremonial functions at the beginning and end of the gathering, but the chief can do his own talking in the middle.
